For those of you not here last year at this time, I’d like to extend a warm and hopeful wish for this Christmas Season, even if you don’t celebrate it. Christmas is more than just celebrating the birth of a child in a manger. It’s a time of hope, happiness and being with friends and family.
And what better way to spend this holiday than with some great movies built around Christmas? I’m not talking about the usual 4 golden retrievers finding a new master type film. These are the cream of the crop. The best that Hollywood has ever produced for Christmas. Presented here are just a taste of these wonderful films, with links to get your own copies.
Let’s get ready for an awesome Christmas Movie Fest!
SCROOGE. This 1951 film has it all. Wonderful characters, excellent sets, lighting and costumes, and acting that is so good you’d swear that you were actually in London in the 1850’s. This is the premier Christmas film of them all. Forget the other versions of A Christmas Carol. None of them can match this one. A Christmas Carol is my favorite book, and this film nails it perfectly. Alistair Sim is perfect as Scrooge, the man who has forgotten that to be human, one must be grateful and loving.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET. In 1947, Edmund Gwenn gave a performance as Kris Kringle by which all subsequent Santa portrayals have modeled themselves on. Gwenn won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and deservedly so. He IS Santa Claus, leave no doubt about that. The film itself is about efforts to prove that Gwenn’s Kris Kringle is indeed the actual Santa Claus. With an excellent support cast including Natalie Wood, John Payne and the late Maureen O’ Hara, you’ll not be able to keep your eyes dry for this great film.

LARCENY INC. When J. Chalmers “Pressure” Maxwell (Edward G. Robinson) is discharged from Sing Sing prison, he vows to go straight for his daughter’s sake. He purchases a small luggage store and begins to help his neighbors improve their own stores. Maxwell’s two fellow ex-prisoners mistakenly believe that Maxwell has bought the store in order to dig a tunnel from the basement of the store into the bank next door. All of this takes place in the 10 days before Christmas, with the film’s climax occurring on Christmas Eve. Not your typical Christmas film, but one that will make you laugh and root for a guy whose life turns around for the good on Christmas Eve.

- A CHRISTMAS STORY. This was released in the summer of 1983, can you believe it? Movie studios have always had trouble with Christmas movies, releasing most of them in the summer time. But take heart, for this is an excellent Christmas film that is a treat each time you watch it. For me, I am especially delighted to hear the voice of Jean Shepherd, a radio legend and humorist with few peers. The film was adapted from a short story by Mr. Shepherd. For a special treat, here is Jean Shepherd reading his story on the radio in 1974. It’s an excellent introduction to one of the best story tellers in American History. Enjoy.

- DIE HARD. You knew this one was coming, didn’t you? Die Hard ahs become a Christmas staple, much like A Christmas Story and A Christmas Carol have become. In fact, Encore network is running both Die Hard and Die Hard 2 on Christmas Eve. Let’s hope this becomes a new Christmas viewing ritual. I probably don’t have to tell you the story, but I will tell you that it is very much about how a man redeems himself on Christmas Eve. Pay attention closely to the story arc for John McClane, as he goes from being a cynical, unlovable slob to a man who realizes how great it is to be alive and married to a great woman.
